Prior to her current position Sommerfield held many positions at Schwab, including executive vice president of retail client services, senior vice president of active trader services and vice president of business planning.
Before joining Schwab in 1994, Sommerfield was a management consultant for five years at McKinsey and Co., where she served many Fortune 100 companies on strategic issues. She started her career as a research engineer at Merck & Co., Inc. working on new drug development.
She currently serves on the SIFMA Operations Committee and the Equity and Options Planning Committee of the Depository Trust Company.
Sommerfield earned her Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from the California Institute of Technology and her Master of Business Administration degree in finance and marketing from the University of Chicago.
