Resume Tips

Good electronic resumes offer "scannable" content — formatted in a way that can be correctly read and searched by an online system.

  • Use bullet points instead of paragraphs.
  • Describe what you have done and what skills, tools or technologies you used.
  • List your major accomplishments and their impact/results.

Schwab recommends you upload your resume to our system, rather than entering it by copying and pasting. Our technology allows you to upload your resume in any format.

  • When you enter your resume manually using copy and paste, formatting, tabs and/or special characters may not be readable.
  • Use a plain text file (or Text Only) to copy and paste your resume into online forms.

Your resume should give a recruiter a good, quick snapshot of your skill set. Most recruiters read hundreds of electronic resumes each week. They look for resumes that outline specific experience in a clear and chronological format.

  • Use simple formatting.
  • Tell what you did, where you did it and the dates.
  • Tailor your resume for the specific job to which you are applying.

Some important resume do's and don'ts:

  • Do check for typos and grammatical errors, in addition to using spell check.
  • Do have trusted colleagues review it for readability.
  • Don't exaggerate on your resume.
  • Do highlight specific accomplishments and achievements as they apply to the position you are seeking.
