"I have a daughter, Megan, who was a very materialistic child, label conscious, and some may even say judgmental depending on what she perceived as your social status.
I decided to take Megan on a field trip to a homeless shelter in Phoenix where Schwab employees donate their time on a bi-monthly basis. It was quite an enlightening experience for both of us. After an evening of feeding the homeless, we left with a new appreciation of how much we have, and how much we had to offer. A smile, a kind word, these two simple things made such a difference in these people’s lives.
Megan and I now go to the shelter as often as our schedule allows. I am happy to share these experiences with my daughter, to help her grow up with the knowledge that who she is makes a difference. She has matured quite a bit since that first experience, as have I.
I am thankful to work for a company like Schwab, who has such deep ties with the community. Schwab allows me to offer back some of my good fortune to those less fortunate and share these values with my children. My children have come to understand the importance of community, that we are all human beings who deserve love and a kind word, and when they share, the world can truly become a better place."
